Artist Bio #9: Hillary Sametz, Violist

Canadian musician Hillary Sametz is currently enrolled in the University of Missouri-Kansas City Music Therapy Masters Equivalency program.  She recently completed her Masters of Music in Viola Performance at UMKC studying with Scott Lee and Benny Kim.  Hillary received her Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from Brandon University in 2008, where she was the recipient of the University Gold Medal.

Hillary’s varied career as both a Pianist and a Violist has led to many exciting opportunities, including as a member of the string quartet-in-residence at the Centre for Opera in Sulmona, Italy; a concert tour across Palestine and Israel while on faculty at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Ramallah, Palestine; and most recently premiering works through Kansas City’s Black House Collective and The Charlotte Street Foundation.

An avid volunteer, Hillary has worked on various projects including an HIV/AIDS and environmental awareness initiative in South Africa, sung for senior citizens at nursing homes, and taught piano at inner-city schools.  Hillary hopes to use music to create positive change in society and improve quality of life.  Hillary also volunteers with Citizens for Justice in the Middle East, and is a member of the Jewish Voice for Peace Council for Artists and Cultural Workers.  In her spare time, Hillary enjoys baking, reading, microbrews, cycling, and covering Radiohead songs with her husband, Whasy.
